High School students look a books

Just a few quick notes on the Mock Caldecott programs I’ve held. Last week I went to the local high school, and with two grade 9 classes, we held a Mock Caldecott. I’ve been working with this group of students since September, so they have had time to really explore the books. It took 3 votes for each group to declare a winner! In one group, Mr. Wuffles by David Wiesner was the clear winner, with Bluebird by Bob Staake and  Mr. Tiger Goes Wild by Peter Brown and Journey by Aaron Becker as honor books. In the second group, again, Mr. Wuffles won out, with Mr. Tiger Goes Wild and Bluebird as honors. That cat in Mr. Wuffles really appealed to this group – they loved how the cat was so realistic, thereby making the alien and bug world feel very realistic as well. The fact that the pictures told the story, and that the story was engaging, really brought this book up in their esteem.

Mock Caldecott in progress

On Saturday, January 18, I held a Mock Caldecott program for adults. Flu season kept the group small, but from 11 AM until 2 PM, we looked at the Caldecott criteria, talked about how to look at art in picture books, and then delved into really looking at the books. We had to vote twice, and in this group, Journey by Aaron Becker was the winner, with Mr. Tiger Goes Wild and Bluebird as honor books. Everyone is pretty excited to see what book the actual Caldecott committee chooses – and if you are as well, you can watch it LIVE on January 27 at 9 AM Atlantic time, right here!
